August, July and June Meeting Info

August 20, 2017 News

Dear Community Focus Team members,

Our next meeting is Monday, August 21, 6pm at the Edison Board Room. In preparation for that meeting, the interim planning committee asks that you (1) review the attached presentation (CFT_Org_V4.pdf) on five “structural models” to consider (2) be prepared to share your perspectives on pros/cons of each model for CFT and (3) be prepared to cast a vote on a structural model to move us forward. We plan to review this briefly and then spend only part of the meeting processing and coming to decision. Your attention to this in advance will be helpful to keep us moving.

June 26 Community Focus Team Meeting

Greetings, Community Focus Team,

The best date for the group appears to be Monday, June 26, so our next Community Focus Team meeting will be 6-8pm that day in the Board Room of the Edison Building.  An interim planning team (Catherine, Deborah, Michon, Heidi, Jean, Kamau, and I) worked on an agenda, to keep our purpose work moving forward.  The interim team took the six purpose statements that came forward from the table work (see notes attached) and tried to capture the essence of those into the proposed purpose statement you see in the agenda below.  We’ll be asking you to discuss this in the meeting and craft the “how” statements to go with it. We’ll also be asking you to decide whether the CFT should be formally connected to the district as a task force of the Board (pending Board approval), or a fully independent group, with participation by invited district staff.  We’ll also be working on the more permanent planning committee structure.  We hope you are able to join us on June 26.

Agenda: Community Focus Team (6/26/17, 6-8pm)

  1. Welcome, Context, & Grounding
  2. Type of Committee – Formal Connection or Independent
  3. Purpose of CFT
Proposed: The Community Focus Team will provide a transparent process to gather community input from stakeholders (families, students, advocates, staff) regarding equity and disparity of marginalized student populations and provide advice/counsel and recommendations to the School Board to foster student success.
  4. Planning Committee Structure
    1. 70:30 split, community to district leadership
    2. 8-9 members
    3. Possible Roles – meeting facilitators, recorder, historian, email communications, agendas, liaison to district.
    4. Next Steps
      1. Planning Committee Interest Sign-up Sheet/Google Form
      2. School Board Study Session on Discipline Data (June 27, 5:30pm)
      3. Next CFT – July 25 (potluck dinner, 6-8pm)
